Music

Since ASAI was founded, educators and volunteers have used music as a tool for adolescents and adults to express themselves, to foster inclusion, and to create meaningful cross-cultural experiences.

Guitar classes, ensemble music workshops, and rap and lyric writing workshops are held in our community centers. Thanks to the establishment of Radio Line4, more and more young people now have the opportunity to produce and record their own songs.

Currently, in addition to the presence of the annual laboratories at our centers, there are several established programs.

FUORI D ‘ORCHESTRA (OUTSIDE THE ORCHESTRA) MUSICAL COLLECTIVE

The young musicians who participate in ensemble music workshops at the San Salvario community center gather under this name. This is a group educational course that aims to develop the interpersonal and social skills of adolescent boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 18, focusing on their shared passion for music, while emphasizing the interactions created in an orchestral setting.

Their repertoire can be played at public occasions such as festivals and conventions, but the most impactful of these is during live performances in neighborhoods and squares when the concerts become true street entertainment.

Barriera ShowCase

NDeveloped from the music workshop of the Centro Interculturale della Città di Torino’s Youth Center project in collaboration with ASAI, Barriera ShowCase gives voice to teens of the new generation who feel the need to talk about socially conscious issues such as war, racism, and social media.

The lyrics are written and sung in Italian and their native languages. During the workshop, the teens create instrumental backing tracks, write the lyrics, and record their songs.

Capoeira

The capoeira group Angola N ‘golo, founded in 1991 by Maestro José Carlos, works in the educational field in fragile communities in Rio de Janeiro.

Since 2010, a similar experience has sprung up in ASAI in San Salvario. The activities involve about 25 children between the ages of 6 and 10 every year. At the same time, classes and workshops are offered for adults interested in capoeira. The annual meeting with Maestro José Carlos, in which numerous Italian and foreign groups participate, is also a well-established tradition.

Barriera Republic

Barriera Republic is an intercultural collective of young musicians that has recorded two CDs and held a hundred concerts in almost 10 years of activity. The name originates from the Turin neighborhood Barriera di Milano, where some members reside, and all of them frequent the area.

Along with original songs about young people’s lives, society, the outskirts, and migration, the group offers reinterpretations of a range of pop and traditional songs, some of which were suggested by musicians of diverse backgrounds who lead the group. Each concert is a journey around the world from Barriera to 1930s America, passing through Europe, Africa, and any place capable of mixing music, stories, and ideas.
