Community Centers
for Afterschool Activities

Since its founding, ASAI has offered educational programs in synergy with schools and local stakeholders to promote the well-being of children, adolescents, and their families. Our community centers are located in different neighborhoods of the city and are attended by hundreds of minors, adults, and volunteers each day.

Our locations in San Salvario, Porta Palazzo-Aurora, and the Barriera di Milano are spaces for socialization and youth participation, where ASAI volunteers and staff from the Terremondo Cooperative contribute daily.

The community centers provide:

  • individual or small group educational support activities for the development and remediation of gaps in different materials in the curriculum, in coordination with the relevant teachers in local schools
  • artistic, educational, and athletic workshops and entertainment
  • L2 Italian courses for adults and minors
  • personalized guidance for educational tracks: periodic monitoring, high school and post-graduation guidance in collaboration with the ASAI Employment Center, support for end-of-school term papers
  • local events: festivals that support and engage local communities, joint planning of initiatives, street fairs

People from restorative justice and MAP (“messa alla prova” or probation) programs, university interns, and School-to-Work students also actively participate in our community centers.

District 8

The association’s oldest community center is based in the heart of San Salvario, and has gone through several changes throughout its history.

Since the mid-1990s, it has been a constant forum for meeting and creating relations between new and existing citizens and between generations, and it provides a concrete opportunity to participate in local community life.

There is an ongoing collaboration with the Italian-Chinese association Zhi Song, the Uniti per Crescere Insieme foundation, and the Afaq and Mondi in Città associations.

In addition to elementary, middle, and high school after-school programs, Via Genè hosts Italian courses, theater courses for adults and adolescents, youth groups, reading groups, and the community library. The library named Tra le Righe (Between the Lines) was established in 2022 as an initiative by our volunteers.

Every year, at the beginning of June, the community center takes to the streets for a big party open to the city, organized and managed by the youths and adults who frequent Via Genè.
